Following are gardening and eco-events coming to Eastern Iowa in May:
Sun., May 1, 5 p.m., The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History, Cedar Rapids Audubon Society and Iowa City Bird Club will host a screening of the full-length documentary ”Ghost Bird,” as a part of the Laysan Island Celebration and fundraiser in Macbride Hall auditorium, Iowa City. ”Ghost Bird is a feature length documentary about an extinct giant woodpecker, a small town In Arkansas hoping to reverse it misfortunes, and the tireless odyssey of the bird-watchers and scientists searching for the Holy Grail of birds, the elusive Ivory-billed woodpecker.” Individual tickets are available for $7.50 in advance or $10 at the door. Family tickets (adults and their children under 16) are $15. Tickets can be purchased at the UI Museum of Natural History, Lenoch & Cilek Ace Hardware locations, Birds Eye View in Coralville, Cedar Rapids Wildlife Habitat, the Johnson County Conservation Education center, or from select members of the Iowa City Bird Club and Cedar Rapids Audubon Society. Door prizes and refreshments will be available throughout the event. All proceeds from the screening will be used for the preservation and restoration of the Laysan Island Cyclorama at the UI Museum of Natural History. A unique nesting ground for albatross and endangered bird species, the Laysan Islands are located northeast of Hawaii. The panorama, which opened in 1914, has mounted specimens of birds from the region. It is viewed by 30,000 visitors annually.
