shadespin answered: I believe the first stanza describes the journey of humanity from a humble underwater organism evolving all the way into present day human civilizations. Basically saying how far humans have gone from the dawn of history to present day civilizations, from a nature-dominated start to current selfishness driven state.
line 1: acquiring the capability to surface onto land (modern evolution theory suggests the first organism lived underwater because the atmosphere was not too kind back then with lots of UV bombardments)
line 2-4: humanity journey from very basic survival living to modern consumptive living
line 5: human greed in exploiting earth
line 6: human conscience realizing their greed and a beginning to try addressing the problem
The second stanza is I think a more poetic way of calling the listeners to open their eyes to the problem and no longer take the beauty of the earth for granted and seek enlightenment.
tired eyes: tired of greed (eyes are the senses usually accredited for being the source of greed - avarice, lust)
line 2, 4: instead of being blinded by greed, use the eyes to savour nature's beauty (blossoming flowers= life, salty brine, blue sky= oceans and the sky)
line 6: enlightenment.
Sounds like they are talking about being them, a human, a person. and what they see.
