About 1000 tornadoes hit the United State

About 1,000 tornadoes hit the United States each year, according to the Storm Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Since 1950, McHenry County has seen 15 recorded tornadoes, the most recent Nov. 22, 2010, in Big Foot and June 19, 2009, in Woodstock, according to the National Climatic Data Center.
Of those 15 recorded tornadoes, five happened in April, including the deadliest among them: April 11, 1965, when six people were killed and 75 people were injured in Crystal Lake.
But tornadoes can happen at any time of the year. Remember that freaky one in January 2008 near Chemung?
Because most tornadoes are related to the strength of a thunderstorm, and thunderstorms normally gain energy from solar heating and heat released by the condensation of water vapor, most tornadoes happen in the afternoon and evening hours, according to NOAA. The least likely time is around dawn.
