"It takes a community to provide care at the end of someone's life. It's time to ask ourselves: How can I help? Let's share the care."
Those are the words of Peter Mansbridge, honourary chair of National Hospice Palliative Care as a week-long campaign focuses on raising awareness, celebrating, recognizing and sharing the achievements of hospice palliative care is taking place across the country.
Terry Mactaggart, program co-ordinator of our own community organization dedicated to palliative care, says she read the words of Mansbridge and thought how appropriate they are, especially here in Niagara-on-the-Lake, where community partnerships are essential for the work of the local organization.
The theme for the 2011 National Hospice Palliative Care Week is "Communities Share the Care," meant to encourage others to become involved in sharing the responsibility of caring for someone with a serious or terminal illness.
