For the man, childbirth is like winning the lottery with no wager. A big, bountiful gift with minimal sacrifice. Like untold men before me, throughout the April Fools Day birthing process, I offered uniformed — and likely incorrect — advice from the seat of my cushy recliner. I guess that’s what fatherhood is. To be a pillar and doofus at the same time, learning from chaos.
Still, I regret the recliner, as a matter of principle.
The only place I could fit in the labor room was in this recliner, which I was surprised to find there in the first place. I held up a leg belonging to said wife and tried not to sound too stupid. “Push, relax,” I probably said. “Now do that simultaneously.” She was in physical purgatory, and I might as well have been in a sports bar.
