The lives of thousands of people who suffer through serious mobility conditions are helped by the electric lift chair, or riser recliner, as it is also known.
But where did the rise and recline chair originate from and how did it develop? Its origins can be found way back in 1928 with the invention of the first recliner.
The Development of Recliners
The first reclining chair company was commenced by cousins Edwind Shoemaker and Edward Knabusch in Michigan in 1927, and in 1928 they obtained the patent for this ground-breaking piece of furniture. This consisted of a standard chair that was customized so that the back reclined and the seat slid forward.
