Glass works
My massive sheet, (the length and width of a generous garage) will take 20 or so people and is supported solely by eight 150mm diameter supports which are on the very edge.
On other gardens I have worked on, similar (but not so big) glass has been used totally flush (and load bearing) with adjacent paving to allow light to penetrate into basements below.
The strength of the glass itself means you don’t need cumbersome supports and framework, making it almost imperceptible.
It works with ancient and modern buildings equally well. Glass is useful for balustrading on raised areas too, almost unseen but stopping the wind and people toppling over the edge.
I like luscious greenery in my gardens, so I decided against glass for the balustrade around the top edges of the glass, and so opted for pleached limes, trained to balustrade wires instead.
