how can I help my kitten feel better about sleeping on his own in the kitten and stop meowing and crying?
cosmiccatgirl aksed: I got a gorgeous little 3 quarter burmese kitten just over a week ago. He's now ten weeks old and adorable, very fun and loving but...the first night he slept with us I let him sleep in the bedroom with us and ofcourse he kept us awake most of the night, then was on the bed with us and in the morning obviously got confused as to where his litter tray was and peed on the end of the bed. The next night we tried him outside our door on the landing in his bed he was ok for a bit but in the early hours was going mad trying to get into us. We ignored him for a bit and he settled back down then let him in in the morning and he was on the bed with us playing etc but then peed on the bed again :( He's done this a few times now and its not good! Even though he knows where his litter trays are and uses them, its only the bed he wees on? So we decided he'd have to sleep in the kitchen so we could actually get a decent nights sleep and stop having to wash our sheets and duvets! Ofcourse, he didnt seem too pleased about this and cried for a while but did settle eventually then was up early crying and when I went into him in the morning he was going mad meowing. He's been sleeping in there for the past 5 nights now and seems to be getting used to it but I can't help feeling so bad and want to make him as relaxed as possible, so how can I put him in to sleep in there and prevent the crying? How about an item of clothing that smells of me? He has all his toys in there with him at night, a bed which i dont think he sleeps in and a scratching post which has a platform which I think he prefers to sleep on. I even have a heated cat pillow to put where he sleeps to comfort him. Ive heard an item of clothing may help that smells of you and ticking clocks apparently remind them of their mothers heart beat?? Any suggestions would be most welcome. We are getting a little girl kitten in a couple of weeks who is his half sister so im sure he'll be a lot happier having a little pal to cuddle up with but untill then I want to make him feel as good as possible. I will eventually let both kittens sleep in the bed with us when i can be sure they wont have any more accidents and have calmed down a bit and let us sleep! I know cats are awake at night though! But my mums 8 year old cat sleeps with her more or less through the night on her bed so I cant wait to be at that stage with my two little babies! :)
I meant to say on his own in the kitchen lol not kitten! I've got kittens on the brain :-)
Thats great advice everyone thanks. I can't let him sleep anywhere but the kitchen as its the only place we can shut a door, if i made his bed area in the living room he'd be straight up the stairs trying to get into us. I think this is true - consistency...I will continue to put him in the kitchen at night he has already astablished some terriitory there as he goes in a litter tray there on a regular basis and has food in there also, I think what I'll do is instead of putting him straight in there, I'll play with him in the kitchen last thing at night instead of upstairs, and have an unwinding cuddle time in there spend an hour in there before I leave him then it may be less of a shock and also do the clothes thing. I have food down for him all the time and he usually eats last thing at night anyway. He goes crazy last thing before bed playing anyhow so is usually pretty tired which is perhaps why it doesnt take him too long to settle. I think I can just keep him to the same routine
suthernbell answered: Try feeding him right before bed time in order to encourage sleepiness. Also place an item that you've worn with the kitty like you suggested, and constantly pet and love on him throughout the day in his bed area. If you can give him an area this is just his that he likes such as a small corner with a little kitty bed, his food bowl, and his litter pan, he will eventually see that as his "territory". It is best to place it in a common area such as the living room so that he doesn't associate that area with being abandoned. My cat prefers an area on the back of the couch. When he was a kitten, I used to have to lock him in the bathroom so that he wouldn't get into trouble and keep me up all night long. He is a very well adjusted kitty, and he has never suffered from his time in the bathroom. Unfortunately, just as with any new pet, it's going to take time for the little one to adjust. The best advice I can give is to be consistent. Choose a plan, and stick with it. He will grow up understanding the boundaries you lay, and you will have a much easier time training him. For example, if you decide not to allow him on the bed, don't ever allow him on the bed because it will only confuse him. He won't know when he is and isn't allowed there, and it will be almost impossible to keep him off the bed when you don't want him there. If he continues to pee in inappropriate places within the next month or so, make sure and take him to the vet. There should be little to no effort in litter training a kitten, and if you are having trouble, it could be due to a urinary problem. Best of luck!!
