Tempur-Pedic rests easy on strong 1Q

Tempur-Pedic International Inc. said Thursday that demand for its premium mattresses and pillows jumped in the first quarter, helping lift its net income by 46 percent.

Consumer demand for bigger-ticket items such as mattresses appears to be picking up. Tempur-Pedic's competitor Select Comfort Corp. reported Wednesday that strong sales of its Sleep Number mattresses helped it more than double first-quarter profit and it raised its outlook for the year.

Tempur-Pedic earned $48.3 million, or 68 cents per share, for the quarter that ended March 31. That's up from $33.1 million, or 44 cents per share, in the prior year. Revenue rose 28 percent to $325.8 million from $253.9 million, with sales in North America surging 37 percent.

Analysts polled by FactSet anticipated earnings of 68 cents per share on revenue of $325.2 million.
