A dim fluorescent bulb hangs from the ceiling of the 180-square-foot (17-square-meter) room on the fringes of Beijing. The floor is littered with cigarette butts, dirty laundry and half-eaten paper bowls of spicy instant noodles.

"This is what I get for living with two guys," the 24-year-old Liu says, hunched near a pile of used computer parts. He's a chain-smoker who speaks machine-gun rapid-fire fast. "It's not just the mess and lack of privacy, but it's also embarrassing to bring girls home."

Which mattress should I buy?

Madzia M aksed: We finally buy our new condo for $50k. We would like to buy new bed and we can't decide. We hear so much good words about Tempur Pedic so we thought we could save for it. But it's 2k for simple queen set.
I've read here that Tempur is just expensive memory foam.
My wife has chronic back pain . I can't sleep on pillow. I sleep on my hand.
What can You suggest and why?
We make 500$ a week. I don't know I can afford Tempur Pedic, even with 48months )% financing...
and we of course have sex very often. The bed we alreadu have has these "two by fours" or whatever they are called under mattress and we broke few of them...
I would like our new bed has something better than that.

You can buy a memory foam piece to put on top of your mattress at many different locations. Costco carries them in queen size for just over $100. This way you can replace it as it loses its comfort. If you buy a mattress made of memory foam or with a cushion-top you will have to replace the whole mattress when the foam loses its comfort.

I find that any type of foam is very warm. I love the coziness and warmth of the memory foam in winter but take it off the bed in summer as it is just too warm.

If at all possible, take the mattress home and sleep on it for a few nights. That is the only way to decide how comfortably you sleep on it. If that is not available, don't be embarassed to lie on it in the store. Wear clothes like t-shirts and sweat pants so that you can comfortably lie on it and turn from side to side so that you get the feel of it. If the salesman tries to rush you into making a decision, he is interested only in his commission and does not deserve to make the sale.

It also sells for around 2k but this is a life time purchase. Have ours 10 yrs and would recommend it to anyone.

Bed-Frame Question: Do I need slats across the middle?

K C aksed: I am getting a queen size memory foam mattress, with the box-spring/platform delivered. I have a bed frame that worked for our full sized mattress, and it is adjustable, so I just fixed it to accommodate queen size. It is basically a square...support along the outer perimeter of the mattress, but nothing in the middle. Do I need to put in some slats across that open space? Will the platform/box-spring support the mattress- or will that sag in the middle over time? It worked fine for a full, but since there will be more "unsupported" space with the queen, will that lack of bars/slats affect the structure of set?

answered: Slats will help support it but you need a center support also. Most Mattress manufacturers warranty state all Queen and King mattresses must have at least 1 center support for the warranty to remain valid. I would invest in a new frame with a center support and use your current one for another room if needed.
Slats would not be needed with a proper Queen size frame.
