Finally, there was something to celebrate on Hatteras Island.
Volunteers from Operation Blessing International had spent five days repairing homes and cleaning up debris. They had gutted a small building on Monitor Lane, just off the main thoroughfare in Salvo, a small village on the Outer Banks, and one of the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Irene in August. The help was welcome.
In this one-story building no bigger than a trailer, volunteers had replaced the wiring, the drywall and the cabinets. They had sent away appliances in need of repairs they couldn't make.
They had sent away the shop's owner, Carol Elmstrom, while work was done, and then on a Saturday afternoon two weeks ago, they reopened the Village Conery, a small ice cream shop.
The volunteers had ordered new ice cream. They had written "Welcome Back" on the placard out front. The effort was the kind of good deed best seen on prime-time television.
