I wasn’t too familiar with this guy before this year, but having listened to all his stuff now, I would say that his new record is a significant step forward for him. A lot of the fuzzy skronk is gone, replaced by atmospheric sophistication. The mood he creates with a simple pallette of guitar/bass/drums is powerful — equal parts haunting and hopeful. I think I told you that he sounds like Jay Reatard ‘s cool older brother who lives in the basement on a futon in arm’s reach of his guitar and his awesome vinyl collection.
