Mirjana’s interior, on which she lavished £400,000, is dramatic, rich and effective. The 14ft-high walls of the former library, which is now the sitting room, are adorned with luxurious Brian Yates wallpaper – costing £210 a roll – and lit with striking Italian lamps and tassled chandeliers.

The furniture is also deep red: Fendi sofas and a heart-shaped pouffe are offset by the light oak flooring and in its centre is a coffee table that looks like heavily lacquered wood but is goat skin. There is another one upstairs – in green – and each cost £14,000.

Much of the furniture is old, most is Italian and all is luxurious: one 19th Century settee is upholstered in white mink. ‘We had collected a lot of things but never had a house they would fit in before,’ says Mirjana.
