The chances of toddlers suffocating on Venetian blinds could be reduced if the industry would redesign the products, a pediatrician says.

Writing in Wednesday's issue of the British Medical Journal, Dr. Mahesh Masand of Dr. Gray's Hospital in Elgin, Scotland, described cases of accidental strangulation on Venetian blind cords.

Masand recalled a 22-month-old girl who was rushed to his hospital after her mother found her hanging from the looped cord of a Venetian blind in her bedroom, perhaps within seconds of strangulation.

The girl was kept on a ventilator for three days and discharged with no neurological complications or other problems after seven days.

"We can't prevent all such incidents but can at least reduce the chance of their happening," Masand concluded.

advice on dealing with private landlord?

kelly aksed: i have recently moved home after renting from a private landlord for 8 yrs. my only reason for moving was that i have become guardian to my niece and needed a larger home. on leaving my home i advised my landlord that my sister would like to take over the tenancy. my landlord agreed to this and informed us that he would carry out the neccessary repairs. he informed us that the repairs would not be carried out for a further 2 wks and asked if i could remove any of my belongings in that time. however 3 days later he started the work and started complaining that i hadn't removed my things. when i pointed out that he had given me 2 weeks he said he'd changed his mind. this was a fortnight ago now, i still had my children's bedroom furniture at the property and on going to remove it i have found that the landlord has thrown it out. I am quite annoyed at this because in the past i have been more than patient with my landlord when i have needed repairs carrying out and for the fact that i have found another tenant for him.
also i paid a £300 deposit when i moved in and he has claimed i was in rent arrears. i have informed him that i didn't have any arrears and he now claims they are from a mix up when i first took over the property.

answered: If you were paying rent for the property then the landlord had no right to enter the property and dispose of your goods. If you were not paying rent, then your situation is slightly less clear - but still covered by the "Torts (Interference with Goods) Act 1977".

With regard to the arrears, you will need to be able to provide receipts or bank statements for the full tenancy period in order to prove that these amounts have been paid.

You can sue the landlord for the value of the bedroom furniture - but you will only get its current value - ie if it is 5 years old, you won't get the value of a new one.

If you have your receipts, you can also sue him for your deposit.

If you have signed a new tenancy agreement with the landlord since April 6th 2007, and the deposit wasn't printed in a government scheme, then you should be able to get the full value of your deposit back. Should I turn my spare Bedroom into a toy room for my daughter or something else?

BeccaBo0o aksed: I am finishing my attic and turning it into the master bedroom (it has a normal stairway, not one that pulls down from the ceiling). I am having trouble debating on whether to turn our room that we will be moving out of into a toy room for my daughter. She has a small room and a small closet. I am going to get her new furniture for her room (shes 14 months) so it can all be matching. I am curious if any other parents decide on a playroom so their child's room can stay clean, or what? We have a small garage that consists of bikes, green house, snowboarding things, tools, freezer, etc. My plan was to make that into a workout space because I have a huge elliptical, and I plan to get a treadmill along with some sort of weight set up, and I would like to put a tv and a stereo system with big speakers so I can play music while I workout. Then my husband says, "well why don't we turn the spare room into a workout space?" So I am super confused on what it should become. If I decide to go the route of garage=workout room, and daughter's room stays the same, then I have a few more questions LOL. Have any of you turned your garage into a workout space?. If so, any tips? Also, those of you who have to organize your child's room: What are your tips for organizing clothes, toys, bedding, etc. to keep the room looking like a room and not every corner and every wall having some sort of "container", or toy box, Like my daughters room! :((. I would like to have a spare room for guests or an office, Or combining a toy room, along with a guest room, but I am sooo confused on how to go about that. HELP. And thanks a lot for answering my questions. I know it is a lot, but i am indecisive and have indecisive people in my home! LOL.
