Grandma6 answered: Look for bright colors that you have in accessories. Yellow, red, even orange would look fine on the windows if you've got paintings, pillows, throws and such with that color in it. Dark brown would darken the whole room quite a bit.

How long should I make my curtain rod stick out beyond window?

Hanna aksed: I am going to hang a sheer on the living room window which measures 54 inches side to side of the window frame. But how much extra should I allow my curtain rod to remain on either side? I am going to cut it so I need to have a measurement. I thought 4 or 6 inches on either side of the window would be good? SHould I leave more or less?

Since you are using a sheer material it is not important to overlap the window a great deal because your objective is not to block out as much sun as possible. Which is the normal case. I would only go past the window maybe 2 inches max on each side. Even when trying to block out the sun completely 4 inches would be about maxium. It also depends on what is on each side of the window. Step back and look at the window. The wider the curtains - the bigger that window will look and the SMALLER that whole wall will look. If you have a very large wall/room no big deal. If you are cramping for space already, then overlap the window even less say an inch on each side.
