For years, I shared houses and apartments with two to five other people. My bedroom was also, by necessity, my office, my living room and my craft corner. When I moved into my co-op, I actually had a real bedroom, a place where I didn’t have to also accommodate my desk, bookshelves and sewing kit. I immediately went about creating a calm, peaceful sanctuary in my home, including some recent changes to the decor.
By sticking with a few treasured objects, a simple colour scheme and minimal accessories, I’ve created a room that appeals to the senses while sparing my bank account.
First off, the furniture here is nostalgic and elegant. The two wooden dressers belonged to my great-grandmother and their deep drawers provide lots of storage. The wicker rocking chair is from my grandma’s house; I used to love sitting in it when I was visiting. The full-length mirror was my great-aunt’s, and my nightstand is a flea market find. I don’t really have room for a bed frame, but a mattress and box spring work just fine.
