kittyrat234 answered: I have never transitioned from crib to toddler bed, but instead have done crib to crib mattress on the floor to toddler bed. This really helped my kids go from being barred while in bed to having freedom but having the security of being safe on the floor without the height of the bed. Once the child was used to sleeping without bars and was old enough / tall enough to get in and out without risking injury while awake or sleeping, we introduced the toddler bed.
Doing it as a three step process worked well for us. (For the mattress on the floor, we tucked it in a corner with internal walls and no windows so that it was warm and safe.)
If she's not climbing out or too big, it's not a situation where you have to do it now. My daughter is 2 and a half, and we're just starting to work on the toddler bed thing. Not very fun. But, you should definitely do it months before the new baby comes. That way she won't feel like the baby is causing this change in her sleeping arangements. Same with potty training, if you start trying slowly now, she'll be out of diapers before baby comes.
