Celebrating Royal celebrity
The global audience for the Royal Wedding is expected to be larger than the 750 million who tuned in to watch the 1981 wedding of Prince William’s parents, Prince Charles and Diana Spencer, but far smaller than 2.5 billion who watched the Princess’s funeral in 1997, making it one of history’s most-watched events.
The reasons so many will be drawn to witness the wedding of strangers, when they might grumble at having to attend their spouse’s cousin’s wedding, is as multifaceted as the bride’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring.
“Some people will enjoy it for its pure entertainment value and some will cherish it as something bigger and more hopeful for the future,” said Fiona Macdonald, a British historian and author of Royal Weddings: A Very Peculiar History.
