Great Beds!I bought this set for my two oldest girls ages 4 & 5, they LOVE the bed and so do I! It is very sturdy and not bulky. My brother and fiancé put this together in about an hour, no issues what so ever. The fact that the beds can be separated into two twin beds is a huge plus. If taken care of properly I'm sure these beds can last a long while or at least until the child out grows the bed. I purchased two regular twin size mattresses for the bunks, rather than getting a bunk bed mattress or cheap mattress that wouldn't last as long as a regular mattress. Great space between the two beds also, great investment and I highly recommend it!
Good price, sturdy, skip the "slats" until the endAgree with the other reviewers:
1) Assembly takes 2-3 hours if you don't make any mistakes and you're used to assembling boxed furniture (I did it myself, alone, and even with breaks didn't spend more than 3 hours).
2) Be sure to put the H-bar with the 7 holes down
3) Assemble the ENTIRE FRAME first--skip the slats until the very end. There is actually no point that I could discern to explain why the instructions don't have you build the entire frame (sides, ladder) prior to the slats. If you skip the slats and make a mistake with the assembly, you do not have to change the slats. I can't IMAGINE what unpopping all those slats would be like, because just putting them in the first time was a complete pain. I used a hammer; only one plastic "holder" broke.
Looks really cute.
ASSEMBLER BEWARE!!!!!We've had the bed for about a month now and the kids love it. It's sturdier than I'd expected and there is plenty of room between bunks. HOWEVER, the assembly instructions for the bed are missing some VITAL information.
One of the cross bars that make up the long side of the top bunk (cross bar H for those who may actually purchase and assemble) has five large holes on one side, and five large holes and two small holes on the other. In Step 3 of the instructions, you are instructed to connect the end supports of the bed with the cross bars. What you are NOT told is that upper cross bar H MUST be connected with the seven-hole side facing DOWN. Otherwise, you will not be able to connect the ladder (which you will not discover until you get to Step 6!) This important detail is not articulated or illustrated AT ALL in the instructions. By the time I realized the mistake I had been misled to make, I would have had to disassemble the entire top bunk in order to get the ladder on, undoing and redoing about an hour's worth of work. Call me lazy, but I chose to simply leave the ladder off. We now have to help our 7-year-old top-bunk-dweller into bed every night. (one positive note: we don't have to worry about our 4-year-old bottom-bunk-dweller trying to climb to the top bunk).
This oversight on the manufacturer's part is not only egregious but potentially dangerous. Though we are generally satisfied with the bed so far, unless and until they correct the instructions, I would not recommend (unless you are fortunate enough to read this review before you try to put it together...).
Why pay more when you can get it for less?No sooner did we get 2 sets of these bunk beds that I found Walmart sells the exact same thing for $149 online with free shipping to the store. I always thought Amazon was the best deal in town excluding maybe winning a low bid on eBay. Anyway, putting aside that we paid too much for the bunk beds on Amazon, they do require a full day's work to assemble: seemingly hundreds of small, different sizes of everything. The instructions call for a 9" top bunk mattress which is clearly too high for absolute certainly the child would not roll over the rail. The bunk bed is sturdy and the side rails perfectly high enough when using a 6" top mattress.
Sturdy, affordable and tall enough you can sit on the bottomOverall, I was pleased with this bed. Putting it together went really well--except for popping in the little plastic locks(my fingers will never be the same), and the part when I went to screw in the ladder, and realized one of the holes was only drilled on one side of the rail. Luckily I own a drill, and a ridiculous number of drill bits to go with it--so rather than taking out all those hellish little plastic pieces(which wouldn't have been there if I'd waited and done it in step 7 instead of before), I drilled a new hole--worked great:)
There were a few reasons I chose this bed--first the price, you can't beat $149(I should have waited two days and saved a couple dollars), the fact you can separate them out into two beds, and there's actually space to sit up on the bottom bunk. I can't stand bunk beds you can't sit up in.
The bed is sturdy--and even though it took me a long, long, time to set up(in fairness I'm a slow builder), it seems like it can handle the abuse my boys are sure to heap on it.
