RIP to the Set-Top Box?
Will the ubiquitous television set-top box eventually become as rare as a rabbit ears antenna? That’s what Broadcom , Cisco , DirecTV and Samsung are working toward as members of the newly formed RVU Alliance , a nonprofit standards-setting organization headquartered in Oregon.
Verizon announced today that it would join the effort, begun last month, which aims to set technical standards that would allow TVs, PCs and other media devices all to be interconnected and receive their instructions from one central server.
By having one main source of content and control, the user interface on each device would look identical. Consumers would no longer have to look at one program grid on their TiVo -connected TV in the bedroom and another on their DirecTV D.V.R.-equipped HDTV in the living room.
The group is employing the “thin client” approach, using relatively simple and inexpensive software in the devices that are being viewed to receive commands from the server.
